The Barrett M82 was first adopted by the United States Marine Corps in 1990 for operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Soon after its initial success, the Air Force and Army began to purchase M82’s. While the M82 doesn’t see as much field action as it used to, it is still used as an anti-material and explosive ordnance disposal tool. Barrett’s M82 has also become very popular in mass media, being featured in many games and movies from Call of Duty to the latest Terminator film.

The longest recorded kill with the M82 was 3,079 yards; the shot was taken by an unnamed soldier in the Australian military in April 2012 during the war in Afghanistan. This shot stood as the longest confirmed kill with a rifle in history for 5 years before it was beaten in 2017.
