The Thompson Submachine Gun or the M1928A1 was the first gun in history to be marketed as a submachine gun. This iconic firearm went from being a service weapon in WWII to being associated with the Al Capone style mob violence, this legacy is reflected in the gun’s many nicknames. The Chicago Typewriter, the Chicago Piano, the Trench Broom, and Tommy Gun were names given to the Thompson Submachine Gun at one point.

The Thompson was a blowback machine gun that was first chambered in .45 ACP and the later FBI models were chambered in 10mm. The gun was invented by brigadier general John T. Thompson and was designed to be used in the trenches of WWI, the war had ended before it could be used though.
