Paul O’Donnell was an avid gun collector during his life and after his death in early September he proved to have a heart of gold.

Paul O’Donnell had a massive collection of firearms which mostly consisted of highly valuable antiques, knowing that that he was approaching the end of his life O’Donnell wanted to make sure that something good was done with all of the firearms he had collected during his life.

O’Donnell’s collection of firearms included more than 1,000 guns many of which were highly desirable collectors pieces. Some of the more interesting pieces from O’Donnell’s collection were Civil War era rifles and a musket from the late 1700s. O’Donnell also had a massive collection of firearms from WWI and WWII.

In his will, O’Donnell requested that the entire collection be sold at auction and that all the proceeds of this auction be donated to a local Animal Shelter in Ontario, California.

At auction this massive collection of firearms went for more than $600,000.  The West End Shelter for Animals was ecstatic about the news and had no idea that this donation was being made until the estate told them.

Helen Rockett of West End Animal Shelter said in a statement “it has made us have the brightest smiles.” “We’re always in need of money, and support for our dogs, their food, and their kennels,” Rockett continued.

West End Animal Shelter told local media that this was by far the largest donation that they have ever received in their near 70 year existence.

The shelter announced that they would use the funds to build a new wing of the building that will expand the capacity of the no-kill shelter and upgrade operations.

Helen Rockett told the press that this was “going to make me cry.” Rockett continues saying “He’s gone, but what a great bequest. It’s made the biggest difference in having the building built faster and sooner than we expected.

Paul O’Donnell’s 3 animals were sent to the West End Animal Shelter after his death and staff members are fostering these animals in their homes.
