It has become normal for Democrats to politicize mass shootings as their first reaction to these horrible tragedies. It’s one thing to politicize shootings but it’s another to do it with completely false information and that is what California Gov. Gavin Newsom did on Monday.  The shooting in question took place on Memorial Day at the Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, and left 9 people hospitalized, including minors. Newsom attempted to blaming the shooting on a DeSantis bill which does not require a permit to conceal carry in the state. The problem is, that law is not in effect until July 1st.

Newsom tweeted:

“DeSantis signed a permit-less carry bill in April that removes requirements for: -background checks -instruction -training+oversight. Until our leaders have the courage to stop bowing down to the NRA and enact common sense gun safety this kind of senseless violence will continue.”

But the DeSantis team was quick to respond and press secretary Jeremy Redfern pointed out that the bill Newsom referenced is not even in effect yet. Redfern wrote, “Hi Gavin. How does a law that doesn’t take effect until July 1st change this outcome?”

The DeSantis bill also isn’t free reign for anyone to purchase a firearm. According to Fox:

Under existing Florida law, people who wish to obtain a license to carry concealed weapons in public must:

-Be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States
-Be at least 21 years old
-“Desire a legal means to carry a concealed weapon” for lawful self-defense
-Pass a fingerprint-based background check
-Complete a firearms training class, among other requirements.

The Federal Government still requires arms dealers to run a background check on gun purchasers as well.
