In the latest update on the Alex Murdaugh trial, Murdaugh himself took the witness stand. This was a move that his team advised against, and is typically not done. Murdaugh stated at the trial in one of the biggest revelations of him taking the stand that he did lie about his alibi though he did not kill his wife or son. He also mentioned that when he started lying he just couldn’t stop. This however he attributed to being in part of drug addiction issues he had at the time.

Everything You Need To Know About The Murdaugh Murders

This comes as an update to our original story on Alex Murdaugh, his family, and the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.

Breaking: Alex Murdaugh Trial Evacuated With Bomb Threat

Alex Murdaugh’s Family History
Alex Murdaugh comes from a very rich and connected family in South Carolina. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all practiced law and were elected to be top prosecutors in the area – in a span of almost 90 years. The family had a private law practice, and Alex Murdaugh seemed to be living the dream. Multiple properties, a picture-perfect family, and success – what could be wrong? Alex and Maggie began dating in college, married, and had two children. Their oldest, Buster Murdaugh, and then their youngest, Paul Murdaugh. At the time of their deaths, Maggie was 52 years old and Paul was 22 years old.

Where the Case Really Starts
While the case, at present, all started with the double homicide of Maggie and Paul on June 7th, 2021 that isn’t exactly where the whole story starts. Two years before Paul and his mom were shot to death on family property Paul was indicted on three felony counts of boating under the influence after a boat, his father owned and he was driving, crashed into Archers Creek Bridge at around 2 a.m. February 24th, 2019. The accident resulted in  19-year-old Mallory Beach being flung from the boat and her ultimate death and two others being injured. Paul didn’t seem that concerned about those on the boat with him and instead of looking for Beach, who was missing for five days in the water before she was ultimately found deceased, he called his granddad to help him out of this mess. And yes, if you read the dates you’d be correct…this was two years before he was 22, making Paul just 19 years old at the time. Though this wasn’t that big of a deal to his family who knew he drank and even bought alcohol for him and his friends. This is why Mallory Beach’s mom and two other victims involved in the boating accident filed a legal claim against the estates of Margaret and Paul Murdaugh. Knowing Paul’s parents played a role in all of it.

Could This All Be A Bigger Conspiracy?
Many wondered if Mallory’s death could have played some sort of role in Paul and Maggie’s deaths – as two different guns were used which left quite a bit of suspicion surrounding the incident.

Alex’s Attempted “Murder”
Just about four months after Paul and Maggie were killed, Alex was “shot” while on the side of the road changing a tire. Though Alex was fine and the bullet only grazed his head leaving superficial wounds. Days later he announced he had issues – in which it came out that he had stolen money from work. And months later, in December, Alex admitted he was having an opioid issue. Then in September, he had attempted to have himself killed so his only surviving son could cash in on the life insurance policies for dad, mom, and brother.

Finally Charged With The Murders
Charges kept piling and he was eventually charged in Maggie and Paul’s deaths. And on July 14th, 2022 a grand jury indicted Alex of the double murder charges for their deaths. While he plead not guilty, state prosecutors are now saying – as of January 25th – that Alex Murdaugh killed his wife and son, and the forensic evidence would prove it.

What Next?

The case is still going, and there are many other twists and turns that one could simply not include in just one article, though you can follow along with the trial. As it continues there are sure to be dozens more secrets that will come to the surface. Though something that always sticks out to me about these family murder cases is that they never reach out to the public and plead for help in finding the killer, or bringing a killer to justice – and this is no exception. What are your thoughts? Do you think Alex Murdaugh really did kill his family? Or is there a theory you believe is a more viable option than just a man looking for life insurance money?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and we will update the story if anything new comes out as this is an unfinished updating story.
