There comes a day in everyman’s life where he can go out and buy a gun and he probably should, but there also comes a day when he should probably put that gun away for the last time. That isn’t meant to be a statement about gun control, that is a statement about personal responsibility.

Researchers at the Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus have developed a free resource at FirearmLifePlan.org that will allow anyone to anonymously create a plan for what to do with their guns in the event they become impaired as a result of an accident or age. This would be a resource that families can use to prepare for a potentially unpleasant period in life.

Dr. Emmy Betz who is a professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine said in a statement “It’s something that we developed for firearm owners and their families to help think through what they would want to happen in the future, either if they develop impairments that make them less safe at handling firearms, or ultimately at their death.”

While many in 2A world and gun owners, in general, are opposed to the idea of relinquishing their firearms, as they should be, this isn’t necessarily a bad idea. If you have a family member that is getting older and you notice that they are starting to lose some of their mental faculties, maybe you should consider finding a new home for their firearms.

It is not uncommon for families to take away grandpa’s car keys if they think he is getting too old, should we consider doing the same with firearms?

There are some issues with the plan itself but conceptually this is not a bad idea. Figuring out what to do with your firearms prior to passing away or being unable to safely use them is important. If you don’t figure out what to do with your arms after the end, they will likely end up in an incinerator somewhere, this is not ideal.
