Top Maryland officials made a vow to ban all “ghost guns” or homemade firearms in the state in an effort to curb the number of “untraceable” firearms on the market.  Lawmakers in the state have previously pushed this kind of ban in localities throughout the state but with no great success.

As reported in the Baltimore Sun:

Top Maryland lawmakers vowed Tuesday to ban “ghost guns” in the state this year, hoping to disrupt the supply of unregistered and untraceable guns that can be bought easily online, sidestepping background checks.

Efforts to ban ghost guns have languished in Annapolis the past few years, but lawmakers and activists are making a renewed push for the ban as the weapons are becoming more common.

“It is clearer now than ever that we need to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous extremists, as well as those who are in crisis and pose a danger to themselves or others,” said Melissa Ladd, state chapter leader for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

Ladd was among dozens of Moms Demand members in red T-shirts, jackets and surgical masks who gathered Tuesday in Annapolis to make a public push for the ban on ghost guns. The members planned to have video meetings with more than 140 of the state’s 188 lawmakers on Wednesday.

This move by Maryland lawmakers is just another move in the wrong direction and one that will undoubtedly go through. Maryland is not just a left leaning state, the state is a far left leaning state and legislation like this is sure to pass without any great contest from Republican governor Larry Hogan. The state already has a litany of gun control laws on the books so they figure adding another will do the trick when it comes to stopping the rampant crime in cities like Baltimore.

Homemade firearms come in many shapes and sizes and vary in quality greatly. While there are some capable of making a fully functioning rifle out of their garage that is stocked with tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools, not everyone has the capability or machinery required. Any law like this would be used to punish criminals as an additional charge and to punish hobbyists who are messing around in their garages.
