The US Territory of Guam has passed new legislation that will allow its residents to own suppressors in a bipartisan vote.

The bill reads: “therefore, it is the intent of [Guam’s Legislature] to remove the restrictions on silencers and suppressors in Guam’s firearm laws, subject to the provisions of federal laws, rules, and regulations… The combination of silencers/suppressors and traditional hearing protection such as earplugs and earmuffs will reduce the risk of noise-induced hearing loss from firearms training and hunting.”

As addressed in the bill, suppressors are a firearm accessory that is meant to protect the hearing of its user. These accessories are supposed to be a piece of safety equipment more than anything else.

Regulations on suppressors are archaic, they do not reflect the real world application that these accessories have nor are they based on any genuine concern for their misuse.  The belief that suppressors completely silence a firearm is unreasonable and that idea is one that stems from Hollywood, despite this many Americans who support regulations on suppressors believe this. Until more people are educated on the subject and understand what these devices actually do,  there will be no progress made on this issue.

The movement to deregulate suppressors in the United States has been ongoing for a while now, and while they have been some minor success there is still a lot of work to be done.
