Winchester ammunition has announced that the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has selected the company for an exclusive 5-year contract to create .308 Winchester rounds.

The contract is worth approximately $5 million and was made to support the FBI’s sniper program. The FBI’s sniper program stands atop all law enforcement programs of its kind.

This is a major step forward for Winchester but not something we didn’t expect. Winchester has for a long time accepted government ammunition contracts, the company runs the US Army’s historic Lake City ammo plant. Outside of this, the company has sold many different calibers to the government.

For the FBI, this contract is the first of its kind. The FBI has not contracted out the manufacturing of sniper ammunition before and if Winchester can prove useful here we will likely see more contracts like this in the future.
