There is a battle going on in North Carolina over pistol purchase permit laws that have been place since the Jim Crow era. Republicans in the state are looking to overturn the laws and gun control activists are standing alongside Democrats fighting to keep them in place.

The pistol purchase permit laws work in a way that virtually no one is happy with. In order to obtain a handgun in the state you must first get into contact with your local sheriff and seek his or her approval in order to buy one.

North Carolina House Republicans have already passed a measure to repeal the rules and now this measure is in the hands of the state Senate, before it can get a vote on the Senate floor the legislation needs to get through at least one more committee vote.

Interestingly the North Carolina Sheriffs Association has come out in favor of repealing the legislation. Typically police groups are opposed to pro-firearm legislation and side with the gun grabbers on these issues. This legislation however, leaves much more to consider politically, the original pistol purchase permit laws that many want repealed are relics of the Jim Crow era, policies like these were used to oppress minorities and their 2A rights.

As it stands now only North Carolina Democrats and gun control activist have stepped in to defend these pistol purchase permit laws. Democrat state Senator Natasha Marcus argued that repealing these laws would create a large loophole for those looking to purchase a handgun. What is not taken into consideration here is that a background check is still necessary and dealers always hold the right to deny a sale, there is no legal loophole being created as there are still rules to stop criminals and others who are not allowed to purchase firearms from doing so.
