A group of Republican law makers are aiming to ensure that an individuals gun rights remain intact as the legalization and prolific use of marijuana grows in the country.

Marijuana is legal for adults in 16 states in terms of recreational use and legal in 34 states in terms of medical usage, that said it still remains a schedule 1 drug on the federal level. Marijuana being classified as a schedule 1 drug means that any sale or possession of firearms by those who use marijuana is still criminal. The GRAM Act seeks to correct this and protect the Second Amendment Rights of American’s who use marijuana.

The GRAM Act or Gun Rights and Marijuana Act has been filed in the house as H.R. 2830 and is sponsored by Representative Don Young and co-sponsored by Representatives Brian Mast and Rodney Davis.

Representative Dong Young, who comes from Alaska where Marijuana has been largely decriminalized since 1998, says that the current regulations make no sense whatsoever.

It also defends the Tenth Amendment right of states to determine their own cannabis laws, as Alaska did in 2014,
