Two different gun control bills are making their way to the Governor’s desk in Colorado.

The Colorado legislature has sent two gun control bills to Colorado Governor Jared Polis who is likely to sign them as he is a Democrat. One bill, Senate Bill 78, will require that all Coloradans report lost or stolen firearms to police within 5 days of them going missing, failure to do so will result in a $25 fine on the first offense and possible jail time on the second. The second bill, House Bill 1106, will require gun owners to store their firearms with a trigger lock or in a gun safe when it is reasonable to assume that a child or someone who is ineligible to possess a firearm can gain access. Not a single Republican voted for either bill.

From The Colorado Sun:

“(Polis) intends to sign them,” said Shelby Wieman, a spokeswoman for the governor.

The two bills were introduced before the shooting at a Boulder King Soopers in late March in which a gunman killed 10 people.

State lawmakers are expected this year to also introduce and debate a bill that would require a waiting period between when someone purchases a gun and when they can access the weapon.

The Boulder shooting prompted discussions about the possibility of Democrats introducing a bill to ban assault weapons this year, but it’s not clear if there are enough votes in the legislature to pass the policy. Polis and House Speaker Alec Garnett, D-Denver, have declined to say if they support the proposal.

Gun owners were likely to report a stolen firearm to police and keep guns away from their children before these bills came into existence, so why even bother passing these laws? Simply by the virtue of these bills being signed into law, the gun control crowd gets to mark today as another victory.
