A bill in Oregon that will require mandatory storage of guns is moving along quickly in the Oregon House.

House Bill 2510 was approved by the Oregon House Health Care Committee and will require firearms be locked up in a container or gun room with cable locks or trigger locks. Violating this law would net you a $500 fine and if someone under the age of 18 were to access the firearms it would be raised to a $2000 fine.

From East Oregonian:

House Bill 2510, approved Tuesday, March 30, by the House Health Care Committee, would require the storage of firearms with trigger or cable locks, in a locked container or in a gun room.

An offense would be a Class C violation, which carries a maximum fine of $500, unless someone under age 18 obtains access, in which case it is a Class A violation with a maximum fine of $2,000. No jail time is imposed for violations.

The committee vote was 6-4. All Democrats voted for it, and all Republicans against it.

On March 25, the Oregon Senate voted 16-7 to approve a bill making state buildings — including the Oregon Capitol — off-limits to firearms carried by concealed handgun licensees. Senate Bill 554, which went to the House, leaves it up to local governments to decide that question for their own buildings.

Mandatory gun storage has been floated for a long time but it has always been shut down when it comes under scrutiny. Opponents of such measures have argued that it is an unenforceable measure and many gun owners already put their firearms in a safe to prevent young children from gaining access to the firearm or thieves from taking them. Most gun owners are not opposed to using a gun safe to store their firearms, but being forced to do so goes against principle.
