Two masked-men broke into the home of 73-year-old Linda Ellis and demanded money, according to police. One of the intruders then shot Ellis. The suspects were forced to flee after a 12-year-old unidentified occupant of the house shot at the suspects in what police described as “self-defense.”

The boy shot Khalil Herring, who later succumbed to his injuries at Wayne UNC Health Care. Another suspect was found and was also taken to the hospital, according to police.

Ellis was treated for non-life threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition, police said.

This young boy saved his grandmother and his great-uncle who was also in the home. His great-uncle stated that these intruders would have likely killed everyone in the home if the young boy had not intervened.
